Victoria Fuller

BIOGRAPHY

Victoria Fuller
Victoria was raised on a farm in Pennsylvania. As a child she excelled in art and music, climbing trees, and bugging her older brother and sister. Her father, a photographer, and her artistically inclined mother encouraged her to be creative and she was also inspired by her equally creative siblings. She excelled in drawing and painting and also taught herself guitar and began singing and songwriting. She studied art in college, moved to Colorado, performed her music, created art, got married, and divorced. In search for knowledge and adventure she traveled to China witnessing the Tiananmen Square uprising, to Africa on photo Safari, and on the Amazon on a house boat creating botanical illustrations, She has lived in Paris to study French, New York to immerse herself in the NY art scene, and in San Francisco to study at the San Francisco Art Institute.

She moved to Chicago in 1992 to get a degree in art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She gave up music for several years to concentrate on the visual arts but could not stay away forever, and began to persue it once more. Now she is both a singer/songwriter and an accomplished sculptor / painter. Besides doing solo performances, she is also part of an acoustic vocal duo called Head Over Heels and performs with her singing partner John Seitz.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My work employs ordinary everyday objects liberating them from their original functions into unexpected formations utilizing a poetic, if not surreal, sensibility. I combine seemingly unrelated objects, or bend the purposes of related objects, in unusual configurations that evoke some sense of use, yet often resemble a Rube Goldberg contraption with no useful function. Some common forms I use - cubes, spheres, cones, geometric grids - have correlates in both nature and culture. Cords mimic tendrils and vines, and multiple electrical outlets are like cellular structure. The usage of industrial fabricated materials and geometric forms, recalls '60's minimalism, while the use of the common everyday object borrows from the spirit of '60's Pop art and 20th century Surrealism. Sculpture titles and visual puns play a part in creating layers of meaning in my work. For example, in "Self Empowerment", the cords go from one outlet into another, back into the same power source where it came from, not powering anything but itself. In the diptych "Plugged In and Unplugged" there are sexual allusions of male and female through the use of outlets, plugs and sockets. By mutating the ordinary artifact into a curiosity, I transform the viewers' perception of the mundane, allowing them to take notice of the complexity and interest of banal objects that they normally take for granted. I want to cause the viewer to question their concepts about the every day world, allowing for other interpretations and to stimulate their imagination to form other concepts about the world around them.
